Can You Really “Search the Minnesota MLS?”
Please note that Northstar Regional MLS does not allow its member agents to have web buttons or links that say “Search the “Minneapolis MLS” or “Search the Minnesota MLS” on their websites. This peculiar rule was handed down to us by the local MLS Board of Governors in order to safeguard its proprietary rights under the thin guise of “protecting the consumer.” Interestingly, large out-of-state internet entities can still say things like “Minneapolis MLS Finder,” or “Search the Eden Prairie MLS Here!” Local brokers are forbidden to do so, although they do it all the time. We must say things like “Free Minneapolis real estate search.” What’s up with that? Most people go to Google and punch in a query like “Twin Cities MLS.”

The “MLS” search feature you find on all Minneapolis real estate websites actually is called the “IDX.” All of us use the same feed that is provided by the Northstar Regional MLS. There are some technical distinctions between IDX and the Minneapolis MLS as well as some minor differences in the data sets. For the consumer, this nit-picking parsing of terms does not mean very much. It is sort of like “picking fly poop out of the pepper.” It is a huge issue for Northstar, however. I had a page with a title that said something like “MLS Minnesota” in it and they sent me an email stating that they were going to shut me down in five days if I did not remove it. They claimed I was “implying” that you could search the Minnesota MLS from the site. However, if you want to see the Minneapolis MLS exactly the way that REALTORS see it, give me a call and I can send you as many Multiple Listing Service properties as you wish.
The important point is that you can find almost all Twin Cities homes for sale that are currently listed on the Minneapolis MLS. I am not aware of any local realty companies that exclude their listings from the IDX. Also, I can email to you all Minnesota MLS listings in the exact format that Minneapolis REALTORS use. Either way, you can get all the information you need about Minnesota homes for sale right on this site.
