Apple Valley started out as Lebanon township. The first people probably came from the east coast in 1855. On April 6, 1858, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners created Union Township. The Board met again on April 26, 1858 and changed the boundaries of Union Township, creating Lebanon Township from a portion of the former Union Township. The town consisted of only a few hundred people until the late fifties.
The post-war boom changed everything.. Residential neighborhoods began to develop in the spring of 1955. A Planning Commission was established to keep up with the incredible growth.In the sixties, Orrin Thompson built up large tracts of Apple Valley.. Thompson chose the name “Apple Valley” for several of his plats along highway 42. He planted an apple in front of every home in his development. In 1968, the citizens voted to incorporate the town as Apple Valley.
Apple Valley Homes
During the last half of 2006, Northstar Regional MLS reported 169 single family Apple Valley homes for sale that closed during that time period. The average home listed at $328,544 and sold at $322,798, or 98.25% of list price. Average square footage was 2508. The majority of homes were two story dwellings built in the 80’s and 90’s.
Right now, a number of fixer uppers are available in the 200k-225k, but they will need serious work. If your tastes range toward the highbrau end of the spectrum, you can usually find some multi-million dollar mansions in Heritage Hills. Newer homes can still be found in neighborhoods like Cobblestone Lake, Whispering Pines, and Prairie Crossing.

Townhomes in Apple Valley
Apple Valley Minnesota has one of the largest, newest inventories of available townhomes in the region. There are plenty of units which are less than ten years old, which means the Minnesota stautory builders warranty still applies to the buildings, fees are still low, and most have maintenance free exteriors to help keep fees low. If you are a baby boomer with bad knees, there are some all-one-level units in Regatta and Mistwood that are build by Pulte, and offer life without stairs. Most have wonderful sunrooms attached to a great room with fireplace, a large dining area, and a large sunny eat-in kitchen. These neighborhoods also have great starter townhomes with two bedrooms, two baths, and an attached garage for comfort, convenience, and security. Fees are very low here, so this is the perfect spot for making your first investment in Apple Valley real estate. There are a number of associations that are close to the Cedar and Highway 42 intersection, which is the thriving business district for the area, offering a giant Target store, Barnes and Noble, Walmart, numerous dinning choices, and a multiscreen mega movie theater.
On the upper end of the Apple Valley MN real estate price spectrum, there are some fantastic, gigantic one level Wensman-built townhomes with walk-out basements just of of Diamond Path. Some of these have over three thousand finished square feet and include custom wet-bars, deluxe master suites, built-ins, granite countertops, maple cabinets, jacuzzis, and more. Half a million bucks or so will get you there. If you are shopping in this price range, you can also get a nice new detatched townhome in Cobblestone Lake. Zoned heat makes all the difference in the cold Minnesota climes. If you are shopping in the 300’s, be sure to check out the homes on Falcon Drive near McAndrew and Johnnycake Ridge Road intersection.
