Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, is nestled along the banks of the Mississippi River just a few miles from downtown Minneapolis. Home to 29,172 residents, Brooklyn Center prides itself on its 522 acres of parks and nature centers, diverse residential and business community, affordable housing, quality education, convenient health care, accessible transportation, and historic Earle Brown Heritage Center. The area that Brooklyn Center now occupies, was not settled until the federal government signed treaties with the Sioux in 1851 and 1852. Soon afterward, farming families were clearing land and building homes. Population grew quickly.

During the 1880’s the local political focus was on the rapidly expanding growth of Minneapolis. As a result of this growth, agriculture shifted to market gardening. Amid fears of annexation by Minneapolis, the locals took the first legal steps to create the Village of Brooklyn Center. This halted the advance of the Mnneapolis boundary. The rural nature of the area remained until WW2. The local economy was still agricultural, but soon it became more profitable to sell the land than to farm it. The city ended up with an area of about 8.5 square miles, and a population over 30,000. The city now has about 500 acres of public parks, and a large shopping center in the center of the city. It also has a huge industrial park that is being developed by manufacturers, retailers, and wholesalers.

Brooklyn Center Homes and Townhomes

A search of the Brooklyn Center MN real estate listings on the MLS will usually render results of about 200 or so single family homes. About half of them will be homes from the 1940’s and 1950’s priced under 200k. Brooklyn Center real estate is truly affordable. There is not much for Minnesota lakeshore available here, but sometimes you can find a lake home on Twin Lake for under 500k.
Brooklyn Center is “landlocked” so there is not much new construction in terms of single family homes.

Generally there are about three or four dozen townhomes or condos on the Brooklyn Center MLS. The bulk of these were built in the 70’s and 80’s, but there are a few townhomes that were built in the last couple of years, including detatched townhomes on Riverwood Lane.
