Believe it or not, you can find some good MN walleye lakes by going south of the Minneapolis metro area along Interstate 35. The most notable walleye lake in this direction is Cannon Lake, in Rice County near Faribault Minnesota. This lake is about 1600 acres, with a maximum depth of 15 feet, meaning 100% of this lake is classified as littoral. Water clarity is only two feet, which is what you expect of lakes that are further south in the state. The bottom substrate is predominately boulders, sand, and gravel.

The DNR reports relatively low gill net sampling of walleyes, although people who fish in this lake don’t seem to think that this squares with their own walleye-catching experiences in Cannon Lake. Large numbers of white bass have also been reported in this lake.

On the other end of this price range, there are some smaller cabins and Cannon Lake homes in the low $100’s, in case you don’t want to live here year round (which would be considered strange by some.)
