Chaska began as a brickyard due to an abundance of clay deposits. By 1857, the first houses in Chaska were being built by the bricks. The reputation of Chaska brick soon spread, and the town became known as a brick center. The brick business prospered with the introduction of two railroads. With the turn of the 20th century came other industries, including the processing of beet sugar and other agricultural products; flour making, butter making, the canning of peas, corn, and tomatoes, and the curing of sauerkraut and pickles. Today, Chaska boasts the presence of many high tech industries, and rapid, but well planned growth. As a result, the city is quickly losing its reputation as a gossipy, “cousiny” town. The name “Chaska” is derived from a Dakota word often given as a name to the first born male child. Records show that David L. Fuller purchased the “Shaska” townsite from Holmes in 1852. In 1857, the townsite was platted by the Shaska Company. In the same year, construction began on the original Carver County Courthouse located where the post office and First National Bank now stand. Chaska was incorporated as a village in 1871 and, by special legislative charter, as a city in 1891.

And with the advent of the new Highway 312, all the amenities of the metro area just get closer and closer. And Chaska is not as “shopping challenged” as it used to be a few years ago, when there was just one hardware store and one supermarket that kept selections low and prices high.Now, Chaska boasts a Home Depot, Rainbow Foods, Target Greatland, and plenty of other stores. Chaska is still sort of a charming town but is no longer an insular community, and is experiencing supersonic growth in the housing and business sector. It’s not tied up by the ‘”good-old-boys” any more. You might as well buy in Chaska while the prices are still good. There are nice, affordable twinhomes available near Lions Park from time to time, as well as various loan assistance programs based on income and purchase price. Rottlund has some new row houses available in the low 200′s at Clover Ridge off of Victoria Drive. If you want a detatched townhome, there are usually a number of them available, like the ones at Pioneer Pointe. If you want to live on a golf course, visit Town Course Heights, a neighborhood on the south end of the golf course.
K Houvaninan has built some fabulous luxury condos on Hwy 41 just north of Chaska. Some of the units boast granite counter-tops, stainless steel appliances, master suites with fifteen foot bedroom ceilings, hardwood floors, and plenty of windows. When you have visitors, you can put them up for the night in the special guest suite. There is an underground heated garage and a fabulous party room for entertaining. The location is great, too. You have easy access to major routes, and there is a shopping mall almost directly across the street. Behind the units are walking and biking trails to Lake Grace and the Jonathan trail system.
