Coon Rapids Minnesota is a friendly community that offers excitement as well as the Metro’s gateway to northern Minnesota. There are 850 acres of city parks, two county parks, and Bunker Hills Golf Course. The city officials and community are working hard to insure the quality of the community with its long range plans, including Vision 2010 and Vision 2030. The city was incorporated in 1952 and is known for the manufacturing of transportation equipment, fabricated metal products, and medical equipment.

The city name was inspired by racoons living in the area, but a few individuals believe the name carries negative racial connotations. Some individuals think the name makes the town sound like a hick spot in the Boondocks. Efforts to change the name have failed with the City Council several times. The city’s logo once contained a racoon, but in recent years it has been changed to an oak leaf for some reason.

According to the Northstar Regional MLS Coon Rapids statistics, 238 single family homes sold and closed in the last half of 2006. The average sale price was $235,261; the average year-built was 1975 and the average size was 1920 finished square feet. The majority of homes sold in the 200k-300k price range. New construction for single family homes was limited and sold in the low 400’s. New construction took place in the Wexford, Hanson Manor, and Colleen additions. A handful of waterfront properties sold along the Mississippi, and there were a few Coon Rapids lake home sales on Crooked Lake. There were 143 Coon Rapids townhome sales that closed during the same period, the great majority of them being under 200k.
