Farmington is one of the oldest Dakota County communities, and began as a village of farms established by families from New York. In fact, the city is named after Farmington New York. Later, veterans of the Civil War settled there. It was incorporated in 1872, making it the second community to form a municipal government in the county.
Today, Farmington is a boom town situated on the south end of the Twin Cities metro area. The population doubled between 1990 and 2000! In 2005, the population was counted at 19,000. Farmington has become a bastion of a traditional downtown, farms, recreational areas, new growth and housing areas. The residents are proud of its open spaces and natural resources such as the Vermilion River.
