The earliest of settlers in Ham Lake Minnesota arrived in 1855. They started a town on the southwest end of a ham-shaped lake, and gave the town a Scottish name Glen Cary, which means “beautiful valley. But their homes burned in a prairie fire in 1857, and the settlers left.

Scandinavians who had difficulty pronouncing Glen Cary changed it to Ham Lake, and the township was organized as a township by Anoka County in 1871.

The Census 1880 counted the population at 253. By 1903, telephone service was available for $6.00 a year. In the 1930s, the Rural Electrification project brought power to everyone in the area. At the time, there was no mail delivery, and mail had to be picked up in Anoka county. One farmer picked up mail for others so often that his farm became the first post office. Up until 1984, Ham Lake MN was served by four different post offices. In 1985 the US postal service consolidated service to the city of Ham Lake via the Anoka Post office.

Commercial and residential development received a boost when Central Avenue was upgraded from a wagon trail through swamp and sand as it was widened, graded, gravelled and eventually paved. Ham Lake became incorporated as a city in 1954. Today, major employers include Majestic Oaks, American Woodmark, New Market, Crosstown Masonry, Micron Metalworks, Ham Lakes Lanes and Lounge, Halvorson Concrete Inc, Electric Forklift supply, Diamond Metal Products, Crosstown State Bank of Ham Lake, LaMachine Shop Inc, Dalquist Machine, Rapid Sports Center, Safety Speed Cut, and many others.
