A short fifteen minute drive west of Minneapolis on MN Highway 12 will get you to one of the best fishing lakes to be found in the Twin Cities area. Lake Independence is a fully recreational 844 acre lake located just on the North side of Maple Plain Minnesota. The lake is just under 60 feet at its deepest spot, which is near the south end of the lake.

Because of its proximity to the cities, and because of its high recreational value, the lake has attracted the attention of would-be Minnesota lake home owners. Its 6.5 miles of shoreline are lightly developed. Only lakefront on the north end of the lake remains undeveloped. Morris Baker County Park is situated along the entire southeast shoreline. The boat launch, swimming beaches, picnic areas, and campgrounds all bring in heavy recreational traffic. Because of all of the human activity in and around the lake, both the Lake Independence Citizens Association and Hennepin Parks department are closely monitoring water quality. Late summer here can mean blue-green algae blooms. Also the lake is infested with Eurasian Milfoil, which was probably transmitted from nearby Lake Minnetonka.
The fish seem to think the water quality is just fine, and many game species are thriving in large numbers here. This lake is home to many trophy-sized muskie, who seem to like top-water lures in the morning and evening. Independence also abounds with other predator fish like northern pike, walleye, and bass. It is also an excellent place to take the kids crappie fishing.

Homes on Lake Independence
At the time of this post, there are only two single family homes for sale on Lake Independence listed on the Minnesota MLS. One has 60 feet of lakeshore on the east side; the other is a 1.5M estate with 750 feet of lakeshore. There are a total of about 200 homes along the lakeshore. The fact that there are only two for sale on the Minnesota mls system shows just how scarce the listings are on this lake.
