Minnetonka means “big water,” and the name certainly fits. This 14,000 acre lake is so full of points and bays that it is surrounded by about 200 miles of lakeshore. The lake is 133 ft deep at its deepest point. The source of the lake is Six Mile Creek. The outflow of the lake is Minnehaha Creek. It certainly is the largest lake anywhere in the metro area, and is a popular destination for waterskiers, fishermen, boaters, and people looking for prime Minnesota lakeshore real estate. Game fish here include muskies, northern pike, walleye, yellow perch and bluegill sunfish. If you like fishing, Lake Minnetonka real estate might be in the cards for you.
Story has it that the lake was discovered by two fourteen year old boys who paddled up Minnehaha Creek with a canoe in 1822. The lake was largely ignored until 1853 when small settlements were established and it was known as a hot tourist attraction ever since. Soon oafter, steamboats were introduced to the lake and rail lines increased the accessibility and popularity of the area. The NFL Vikings boat cruise scandal was not the first indiscretion on the lake; Frank Lloyd Wright was arrested for violating the Mann Act in a lakeside cottage with a woman who would later become his wife.
