Muskies really are in lake minnetonka

Muskies abound!

The “foil” has hit Minnetonka rather hard in the last ten years, much to the consternation of boaters and homeowners alike. At the same time, the fish numbers have expanded. Is this a coincidence? After all, who likes eurasian milfoil? It is a nusiance weed that we meticulously scrape off of our propellers every time we pull a boat out of the water so we don’t spread it to other lakes. It spreads like crazy, as it has an uncanny ability to spread by stem fragments. And, of course, the state spends big bucks on herbicides and other measures to rid our shorelines of this noxious weed.

Locals have their own theories linking the increase in milfoil growth and improved fishing in Minnetonka, especially Muskies. Milfoil attaches well to mucky bottoms, while many native sumbergent weeds do better in sandy and rocky soil. The result? The baitfish thrived with the increased weed cover, and exploded in number. Then the Muskie population exploded. There was plenty of baitfish for them to eat. In fact, their numbers have increased to the point where locals are worried that the increase in these ravenous predator fish may actually deplete the numbers of some other game fish!
