Located on the northwestern edge of the Twin Cities and in the Northeastern corner of Wright County, this community enjoys a wholesome and relaxed country atmosphere, but has easy access to all of the culture and excitement that the MInneapolis area has to offer. The area was settled by farmers who struggled for survival in the late 1850’s amid low farm prices, grasshopper plague, and widespread financial panic of the times. What saved the day was a small plant that many considered to be just a weed, but was actually valued by the Chinese for medicinal purposes. The plant was called Ginseng, and the local farmers discovered that it could be dried, and sold to the Chinese at good prices. Digging up Ginseng was a thriving industry until about 1863. The town remained a farming community and continued to grow until the township was incorporated as a city in 1990.

Northstar Regional MLS statistics show that there were 76 single family Otsego homes for sale that closed during the last half of 2006. Most of this real estate sold within the 200-300k price bracket. Average sale price was $273,958 and average year built was 1997, which means that Otsego homes are generally newer and cheaper than many other metro areas. About a third of this activity was new construction, with new homes sold in the additions of Arbor Creek, Crimson Ponds, Kittredge Crossings, Martin Farms, River Pointe and River Place, Sunray Farms, and Zimmer Farms. Notable builders included Distinctive Custom Builders, Backes Companies Inc, Lennar, and D.R. Horton. Otsego townhome and condo sales were also brisk during that time period; 72 units closed according to Northstar MLS.
