Prior Lake is a scenic town south of Minneapolis on the far side of the Minnesota River. The town just keeps growing and growing, helping to make Scott County one of the fastest growing counties in the Country. The Prior Lake MN real estate market is growing with it.

Prior Lake Gets its Name
Artifacts like burial mounds and arrowheads indicate that there were groups of Americans that preceded the arrival of two groups of Dakota tribes that later hunted and fished in the area. Europeans began settling the area as they heard of plans to build a railroad thorugh here. The city derived its name from Charles Prior, a landowner in the region who worked for the Chicago, Milauwkee, and Saint Paul Railroad. The advent of the railroad facilitated agricultural – related industry like a mill, general store, blacksmith, and grain storage. The railroad also facilitated the development of Piror Lake as a resort area, and a local hotel called the Grainwood Hotel attracted visitors from all over the country. Population increased, and the Village of Prior Lake was incoroporated in 1891. The resort and vacation cabin character of the area continued until the area began to undergo significant growth in the 1960’s Growth is continuing, and the population is about 20,000. By the year 2020, the population is expected to be about 28,000. Undoubtedly this growth was facilitated by the Bloomington Ferry Bridge, which made daily travel much easier for downtown Minneapolis communters. By the year 2030, a population of about 40,000 will live here.

The city’s housing stock is diverse and offers options for all lifestyles and ages. According to the MLS, there are usually about 300 or so single family Prior Lake homes for sale, ranging from small seasonal homes and lakefront teardowns to mansions in lakeside additions like Windsong on the Lake. The average list price is a little over 600k, but the number is skewed upward by upper bracket lakeshore real estate. Most of the Prior Lake homes for sale are offered in the 300-400k price range. New luxury construction has been provided by renowned builders like Minnestona Homes, Rock Creek Designers and Builders, Woodale Builders, and Windwood Co Inc. If you don’t mind paying about $30,000 in property tax per year, you can probably find a nice estate with acreage for about 4M. For most people, however, property taxes are quite reasonable, and housing is affordable.

This rapidly growing community is enjoying an upsurge of popularity in carefree lifestyle options, including the increasingly popular condo conversions recently built on Toronto Avenue in the center of town. These one bedroom units feature underground parking, security buildings, handicap accessibility, bright and open floor plans, and are very close to shopping, clinics, banks, and parks. The newer side by side townhomes in Timbercrest Park are very sharp, clean, have attached garages, private entries, and extremely low fees that include just about everything except your phone and energy bill! If you want to spend about a million dollars, you can get about 3000 plus square feet of townhome right on Crystal Bay and enjoy the marina dock provided for you. If you go to Glynnwater along Highway 42 on the north end of Prior lake, you can find a nice executive walkout twin home for about half that price, but can still get bright and sunny rooms, ten foot ceilings, a wooded setting on a nature preserve, deluxe owners suite, wetbar, granite countertops, maple hardwood floors, and about 3000 feet of livable area. If you like golf, try a Ratzlaff detatched townhome in the Wilds for one-level living, two fireplaces, main floor living, and a deck with views of wetlands.
