Tonka Bay was officially incorporated as a village in 1901. The area of Tonka Bay comprises about one square mile, but has more Minnetonka lakefront property than any other city of its size. Tonka Bay is located between the upper and lower bodies of Lake Minnetonka.

In 1883 Peter Gideon staked out 160 acres in this area of a bay called Gideon’s bay. He scucessfully produced his first apples “The Wealthy” . The first great hotel on Lake Minnetonka, the Lake Park Hotel was built in 1879, and was strategically located along a railroad route to bring guests from Minneapolis. The Village was, and continues to boast a wide variety of neighborhoods of different real estate value. Many large estates were already established by the 1900, must notably Clay Cliffe, an estate of about 28 acres. A connection between the upper and lower lakes was cut and dredged on the northern boundary of Tonka bay , and the first bridge was built in 1911.

The city gradually replaced its tourism with a more stable population. The first school was built in 1909. In the early 20’s there were about 31 households in the town. Today, there are about 651 homes and a population of about 1500.

Tonka Bay Minnesota is the place to be if you want prime Lake Minnetonka Lakeshore real estate. But the turnover for lake home properties is low, so if you find something, you can’t dawdle. At the time of this publication, there were only seven Tonka Bay lake homes available, which is pretty typical.
