Whaletail Lake is named as such because the outline of the lake distinctly resembles a whale’s tail. This relatively large 558 acre lake is rather shallow, with a maximum depth of 25 feet. Almost all of the lake is classified as littoral. The deep part is found in the middle of the lower basin. The lake is accessible by a state owned public access on the south shore, featuring 14 trailer spaces and a concrete ramp.

The water clarity according to Secchi disk measurements is a measely 1.5 feet, but it does not seem to impair the status of this lake as a productive fishery, especially for the large predator fish, especially bass and northern pike. In fact, the MInnesota DNR report having netted bass over 20 inches long. Black crappie populations are here in above-average numbers. If you want pike, try fishing the west bay in spring with sucker minnows. If you are looking for largemouth, they are abundant here, and can be caught along the weedlines with black plastic worms.
