Winter staging for Minneapolis homes.

Try staging your Minneapolis home by parking a 1958 Oldsmobile in the front yard and adding Christmas lights to it.

As the dark winter days dry up the last of the foliage on the perennials, and your home exterior is no longer benefiting from the colorful accents provided by those annuals, things start to look a bit drab around the neighborhood. It is easy for your home to start looking like all the others. This is especially true in a harsh climate like Minnesota.

During the winter season, the first impression becomes more important than ever. This is true for both interior and exterior appeal. Here are some free winter staging tips offered by some of the top home stagers in the country:

  • When winter comes, it just makes sense to use the layering effect when dressing yourself. Why not use a layering effect when dressing up your home? Layering creates a festive feeling. If you are decorating your formal dining room table, try placing a table runner across the middle of your tablecloth. Instead of using the traditional runner with tassels on it, purchase some shimmering fabric, and bunch it down the length of the table.
  • Use window boxes that are slightly longer than the width of the windows, and fill them with a lush arrangement of evergreens.
  • Warm it up. Keep the fireplace lit. Having some warm drinks like cider available to viewers might take some chill off of the buying process.
  • Take it easy with the holiday decorating. Big strings of lights with big bulbs and thick green wires will be a distraction from the finer features of your home.
  • Keep it clean. A few buyers tramping through your home during the snowy and slushy months of winter can get your home very dirty very quickly. Most agents and buyers are thoughtful enough to remove their shoes. But why not make things easier for them? Winter boots don’t come off as easily as those slip-ons and sandals used during warmer weather. Make sure some slip over shoe covers are available to them.
  • Less is best. Heavy interior decorations, and things like Christmas trains racing around the tree can make the home seem smaller.
  • For those of you who believe in Feng Shui, staging and decorating can be a bit trickier. You might need some professional help if you don’t know where to place your Christmas tree or whether you should light your fireplace. You might even be able to use Feng Shui to reduce holiday stress.

Hi, Kermit!

What a great picture of the Olds. My family used to have one like that. It may not sell a house, but it sure is an attention getter!
